All About CBD

Although many people who vape weed are only interested in its THC content, there are others who are interested in the CBD cannabinoid. Here, we look at the difference between the two and learn more about what CBD is and its benefits.

What Is CBD?

CBD or Cannabidiol is one of the compounds found in weed and, unlike the better known THC, it has no psychoactive properties and so doesn't produce a high. Instead, CBD helps vapers to relax, and although it affects the body, it doesn't have the same powerful mental effects.

CBD is known to have medical benefits and is known to have the following properties:

  • Antioxidant
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Anxiolytic
  • Neuroprotectant
  • Antidepressant
  • Anti-tumoral
  • Analgesic
  • Anti-psychotic

How Does CBD Work?

CBD is one of more than 80 different cannabinoids and it is known to act on the body's cannabinoid receptors to produce a therapeutic effect. It can also help to modulate pain by working on the body's Vanilloid receptors, promote sleep through stimulating the Adenosine receptors and manage stress and moods by working on the body's Serotonin receptors. CBD may also block FAAH, a fatty acid enzyme which breaks down anandamide in the body which regulates ovulation, pain, sleep, appetite and memory.

Which Conditions Can CBD Treat?

CBD is known to have medical therapeutic value for numerous conditions including:

  • Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Lupus
  • Nicotine addiction
  • Motor disorders
  • Parkinson's Disease
  • Neuropathic and Chronic Pain
  • OCD
  • Osteoporosis
  • Epilepsy
  • Anxiety
  • Psychotic disorders and schizophrenia

Differences Between CBD and THC

There are numerous differences between THC and CBD, and while most strains have high THC levels, there are fewer which are high in CBD. Here are some of the differences that you should be aware of between the two compounds:

  • The High – this is perhaps the most important difference. While THC has a psychoactive effect to get you high, making it great for recreational use, CBD has no such effect and is therefore best for medicinal purposes. It can even be used to treat children.
  • Anxiety – THC can sometimes called anxiety, whereas CBD is known to promote relaxation and to reduce anxiety
  • Antipsychotic – the high from THC can sometimes produce a psychosis effect, whereas CBD has antipsychotic properties which may make it a suitable treatment for schizophrenia
  • Sleep – THC makes users sleepy, whereas CBD promotes wakefulness so is a poor choice for those who require help to sleep
  • Legality – many countries still have laws banning the use of recreational THC, however CBD has a mixed status. In some forms and in some places it is considered to be legal and has been cleared for use in children
